Protecting the environment
We are committed to playing our part in protecting and enhancing the natural environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, using resources responsibly and delivering biodiversity improvements across our developments. Our proactive approach helps to reduce environmental impact while supporting the creation of more sustainable and resilient communities for the future.

Climate change
Tackling climate change is a key priority within our sustainability strategy. We are working towards net zero greenhouse gas emissions across our value chain by 2045, supported by science-based targets and a climate strategy focused on both mitigation and adaptation. This includes reducing emissions from our operations and homes, collaborating with our supply chain to reduce embodied carbon and preparing our developments for a low carbon and climate resilient future. Read more about our strategy and progress on our climate change page.

Natural resources and waste
We are focused on using resources efficiently and reducing waste across our sites. Working closely with our waste management partners and suppliers, we seek to minimise construction waste and prevent pollution incidents as part of our commitment to responsible site operations. Our waste management policy sets clear standards that all sites must follow to drive consistent performance.
Further information on waste performance is available in our Annual Report and ESG Data Handbook.

Water efficiency
Our homes are designed to be water efficient, using less than 105 litres per person per day, which is 16% below the regulatory requirement of 125. Water saving features such as dual flush toilets, low flow taps and showers and water meters help households reduce water consumption and lower utility costs. We continue to explore further water efficiency measures to help address the long-term challenges of water scarcity and climate resilience.
At the development scale, we integrate sustainable drainage systems to manage surface water, reduce flood risk and build resilience against water scarcity. These natural systems, such as swales, attenuation ponds and permeable surfaces, not only improve water quality but also enhance biodiversity and provide attractive recreational spaces for residents.

Biodiversity
Biodiversity, which describes the variety of living species on our planet, is declining at an unprecedented rate. According to the 2023 State of Nature report, one in six species in Great Britain is at risk of extinction.
Across our new developments, we are committed to delivering a biodiversity net gain of at least 10%. We work closely with ecologists at an early stage to embed protection and enhancement measures that support thriving wildlife habitats. By thoughtfully integrating biodiversity considerations from the outset, we balance the urgent need for new homes and social infrastructure with the protection and restoration of nature, creating places where both people and wildlife can thrive.
Homes for nature commitment
As part of the industry's Homes for Nature commitment, we are taking action to support wildlife across all our developments by:
Installing an average of at least one swift brick per house, providing essential nesting spaces for these declining birds
Creating hedgehog highways throughout our developments to enable safe movement and foraging
Incorporating pollinator-friendly planting to support bees, butterflies and other essential species
